Job Description:
The Part-Time Facilities Maintenance Staff ensures that the church building, grounds, and facilities are safe, clean, and welcoming for parishioners, staff, covenant partners and visitors. This role focuses on routine upkeep, minor repairs, and event setups. Grace Congregational UCC is an Open and Affirming Church and Equal Opportunity Employer. Role Objectives / Schedule:
- $28.28 / hour, Part-time (17 hours per week, overtime-exempt). Requires flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, daytime & evening hours as needed
- Occasional on-call availability for plumbing, heating and security emergencies
- 5 PTO days (5/hours each; totaling 25 hours PTO) provided with pre-approval by supervisor after 3 months of employment
- Receive direct supervision and instruction from supervisor (Church Administrator)
- Position may require the use of your own vehicle to pick up supplies and/or equipment for job completion
Key Responsibilities:
- Regularly communicate professionally and collaboratively with Property Committee, Health & Safety Committee, staff team, and supervisor while following policies, protocols and procedures. Attend monthly Property and Health & Safety Committee meetings as a nonvoting member. Attend weekly staff team meetings.
- Responsible for general maintenance of the church facilities, overseeing the upkeep and proper functioning of church equipment and tools, including, but not limited to:
- Inspections, Logging and Documentation: Conduct and log routine facility walk-throughs, log completed work orders and report major damages and maintenance recommendations to Property Committee, Health & Safety Committee and Supervisor via email. Assist in maintaining and developing processes to insure task completion.
- Facility Setup & Teardown: Move chairs, tables, stages and other furniture to prepare the facility for services, weddings, funerals, and community events.
- General Repairs: With prior approval, fix minor system malfunctions, patch and paint walls, repair broken fixtures, and handle basic carpentry or hardware fixes.
- Routine Upkeep: Replace light bulbs, monitor HVAC system and settings, empty dehumidifiers, and complete safety inspections upon request of Health & Safety and Property Committees.
- Groundskeeping & Safety: Serve as contact person for safety issues. Keep walkways clear of debris, handle light landscaping, and manage seasonal snow shoveling and salting to ensure safe entry for the congregation.
- Vendor Coordination: Serve as contact person for committee-approved jobs. Escort and monitor specialized contractors (e.g., HVAC technicians, roofers, elevator inspectors) when major repairs are needed. Provide reports to Property Committee, Health & Safety Committee and Supervisor.
- Purchasing: Complete purchase order paperwork for maintenance materials and equipment for Property and Health & Safety approval and signature. See that approved materials and equipment are purchased.
- Cleaning: Occasionally fill-in for housekeeping (co-worker) to insure cleanliness of bathrooms and trash / recycling removal in their absence.
- Certifications: Possess and maintain appropriate certifications including but not limited to: Vermont Department of Health Inspection, Repair and Cleaning (IRC) Practices training course certification; Heartsaver CPR / AED course certification [paid on-the-job certification within first 3 months of employment]
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Experience: High school diploma plus 2 or more years of basic building maintenance or handyperson experience. Prior experience in cleaning including knowledge of appropriate cleaning methods (with a preference for green products/methods)

- Proficiency using PC, Outlook, Calendar apps and other forms of online communication.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods and work outdoors in varied weather.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to work from ladders at varying heights.
Other opportunities:
- The Grace Church opens its facilities to after-hour meetings and community events throughout the year, including weddings and funerals. A church representative is hired at a higher rate as the custodian, housekeeper and overall representative during those events. This role is coordinated with the Church Administrator and Assistant Church Administrator.
